our story

women owned company social impact social entrepeneurs

Katie & Becky founded The Local Squeeze in 2017. We are a plant based catering company. Becky was working for Oddbox and they were both volunteering for a charity called The Felix Project, which rescues surplus food and redistributes it to people in need. Through their experience with these groups, they saw firsthand the harsh reality of food poverty and food waste in London. They started their business juicing surplus fruit and vegetables. Soon after, they began a weekly cafe residency at The Platform, a community cafe based in South London offering healthy and affordable food, made with homegrown and surplus produce via Local Greens. Becky moved to Wales and works as the head chef at Wild Thing a plant-based ‘pay what you feel’ cafe and provides plant-based catering as Only Love Kitchen. Chris - Katie’s life partner became Katie’s new business partner after having worked with the Squeeze over the years - she knew it well and it felt like a natural fit.

Chris’ culinary story

Chris started cooking for community cafés and volunteer work before joining The Local Squeeze full time in 2021. She learned the ropes in the kitchens of Kastner & Ovens and Café Keppler, an artisan café with a coffee roaster and bakery attached. She’s also an anthropologist with Indonesian roots and a love for anything smoked, salted, pickled, fermented, or mushroomy.

Wowcha! What is that raspberry jam on the oats? It is unreal, how do you find time to make all these little extras for the crew?

Katie’s culinary story

Katie began her journey as a child, her grandmother teaching her all her tips and tricks. Raised partially in Andalusia, she also learned many traditional Andalusian recipes from her neighbour Rosaria. Upon arriving back in London she worked in restaurants finessing her style. Upgrading traditional dishes into a modern, vegan meal is her specialty and she makes a banging Sunday roast.

You guys, thank you so much for the excellent food and for keeping everyone extremely well fed over the weekend. That mac and cheese was up there with the best mac and cheese I have ever tasted. Everyone was raving about the food.
— Ed, Mish Mash festival organiser
